40 off the beaten path things to do in Omaha 1-4

According to the Omaha World Herald, Omaha is a pretty great place to live, work and play. Which of course the majority of us who get to live, work or play here already knew right! We are often know for tour hot spots such as the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo the Joslyn Art Museum , which are great way to spend the day with family and friends, but did you know there is even more off the beaten path.  So let’s take the next few days and explore those great things about Omaha that are off the beaten path.

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

1. Walk across the Bob.
The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, nearly 3,000 feet long, crosses the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs. It’s a must-see for visitors and popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. Omaha Plaza at the foot of the bridge has a fiber wave sculpture and 26 water jets for child’s play.

2. Burp. Tour local breweries.
Hear how three local guys created the Lucky Bucket Brewing Co. and turned a La Vista warehouse into one of Nebraska’s first microdistilleries since Prohibition. Then tour the facilities at 11941 Centennial Road. Afterward, move to the Nebraska Brewing Co. in Shadow Lake Towne Center to see its brewing facilities and grab lunch. Or, if you’re downtown, check out the Upstream Brewing Co. and Rock Bottom restaurants.

3. Visit the Malcolm X birthsite.
The house no longer exists, but a monument marks civil rights leader Malcolm X’s birthplace in north Omaha. The grassy 12-acre area at 3448 Pinkney St. is open to the public at no charge. Call before visiting: 800-645-9287 orhttp://malcolmxfoundation.org/wp/

4. Relive childhood and go down the slides.

They’re in the Gene Leahy Mall near 10th and Farnam Streets. Tip: Gain speed sitting on cardboard, a brown paper bag or wax paper. The park also has artsy benches and walkways along a lagoon.
